While 9/11 was traumatic for all Americans, it continues to cause physical health problems for some individuals who were near ground zero during and after the event. Airborne particles near ground zero have been shown to cause health problems for those who were in Lower Manhattan during and after 9/11. These airborne particles may cause a variety of health complications for individuals, including all of the following illnesses:

  • Upper airway hyperreactivity
  • WTC-exacerbated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
